Swissport Frankfurt recertified by IATA for pharma logistics

Swissport's air cargo center at Frankfurt Airport (FRA) has again been CEIV Pharma-certified by the International Airline Transport Organization (IATA), underscoring Swissport's dedication to excellence in handling pharmaceutical products at one of the world’s leading logistic hubs.

Swissport's air cargo center at Frankfurt Airport has again been CEIV Pharma certified by IATA. This CEIV Pharma certification underscores Swissport's rigorous adherence to the quality and security standards essential for handling sensitive pharmaceuticals.

“The recertification by IATA highlights our commitment to providing safe, efficient, and reliable pharmaceutical logistics solutions for our global customers,” says Andreas Behnke, Head of Swissport Cargo Services for Germany and Austria at Frankfurt Airport. “Our dedication to Frankfurt Airport translates to advantages for our airline customers, logistics partners, and the airport itself. This reinforces Frankfurt's position as a crucial hub for reliable temperature-controlled supply chains.”

Swissport opened its cargo facility in November 2020 and supported critical pharma logistics during the pandemic from day one. The warehouse is still the most modern air cargo center at the airport and spans over 17,000 sqm. It includes a state-of-the-art Swissport Pharma Center with a 1,560-sqm dedicated area for temperature-controlled pharmaceutical shipments, of which 1,300 sqm are allocated for products requiring 15°C to 25°C storage, and 260 sqm for those needing 2°C to 8°C conditions.

DIGITALIZATION AND SUSTAINABILITY

At its Frankfurt facility, Swissport has invested heavily in digitalization and modern equipment to streamline operations and to increase efficiency across the global logistics chain. The warehouse located in the CargoCity South area has direct tarmac access and is equipped with advanced handling technology, facilitating seamless air cargo operations. The automated material handling system (MHS) can store and retrieve up to 115 main deck unit load devices (ULDs).

“As a global expert in cargo operations, Swissport continues to drive the digitalization of its air cargo business to handle air cargo even more efficiently and intelligently. The Swissport mobile devices, fully interfaced weighing system, AI based support tools, cargo kiosks, door management systems, slot booking and Bluetooth ULD tracking are examples of innovations that are in operation, providing Swissport with the ability to process air freight competitively,” adds Dirk Goovaerts, Global Cargo Chair and CEO of Swissport’s CEMEAI region.

Swissport's commitment to sustainability is deeply embedded in its corporate DNA and is prominently reflected in its Frankfurt warehouse operations. The facility operates an all-electric fleet of ground service vehicles, significantly reducing its carbon footprint. Additionally, it boasts the largest photovoltaic system at Frankfurt Airport, generating over 1.5 million kWh of sustainable solar energy annually.

GROWING SERVICE PORTFOLIO AT FRA

In addition to its advanced pharmaceutical handling capabilities, Swissport has recently expanded its services to include freight forwarder handling in Frankfurt. This new service complements Swissport’s existing portfolio of air cargo services for airlines and aligns with the company's holistic approach to serving the entire logistics community.

At Frankfurt Airport, Swissport also provides fueling services via its subsidiary AFS and de-icing services through its subsidiary NICE, further enhancing its comprehensive service portfolio at this key location of global aviation and logistics.
